Old Rehoboth Church & Museum
A small log church can explain a great deal about how people lived, traveled, and worshipped before modern roads and congregational life. Old Rehoboth offers a focused history stop just outside Union.
Where it is
Travel Monroe places the church about 1.5 miles east of Union, just off West Virginia Route 3. Its published visitor contact is 304-772-3518. Confirm current directions and tour arrangements when calling.
Why the site matters
Travel Monroe records the church’s dedication by Methodist bishop Francis Asbury in 1786 on land donated by Edward Keenan. It describes a 21-by-29-foot log building that was larger than the homes where the congregation previously met. Its importance lies in what it reveals about religious organization in a dispersed frontier community.
The circuit-rider connection
A minister did not necessarily serve a single nearby congregation. Rehoboth became part of the Greenbrier Circuit, and its history includes a traveling preacher, John Smith, whose journal recorded worship in the area. Think of the church as one point in a network of communities connected by repeated journeys.
What to look for
The published account identifies the original pulpit as a surviving feature and describes guided visits to the church and museum. Notice the scale of the building and imagine a service in a space without modern conveniences. Ask how the surviving fabric has been maintained and what objects or interpretation are currently available.
Arrange a visit
Tourism information describes seasonal opening, but current staffing and hours should be confirmed directly. Ask whether a guide will be present, whether group visits require an appointment, and whether admission or donations apply. Do not assume a listed historical schedule guarantees access on the day you arrive.
Suggested place in your itinerary
Read the Union history page before you go, explore town, and use Rehoboth as a separate history stop if access has been confirmed. Leave time for the guide’s explanation rather than treating the building as a quick photograph. If it is closed, choose another confirmed stop instead of entering the grounds without permission.
Access and facilities
Ask specifically about the route from parking, entry thresholds, seating, and restroom availability. A museum’s presence does not establish that all parts of the site are step-free.
